💗 Pink Shirt Day in Puāwai 💗

Today in Te Ruma Puāwai (the toddler room), we celebrated Pink Shirt Day—a special day to show aroha (love), manaakitanga (kindness), and stand up against bullying.

Our tamariki (children) embraced the māwhero (pink) theme with so much excitement! We dressed up in māwhero and explored a range of fun, creative activities:

🫧 Gloop māwhero filled with pink treasures – perfect for sensory discovery and learning about take–ua–painga (cause and effect)
🎨 Peita kanohi māwhero (pink face painting) – encouraging imaginative expression and confidence
✏️ Colouring and drawing on māwhero paper – supporting early literacy, creativity, and fine motor development
🧠 Exploring and creating with māwhero play dough – strengthening hand muscles and imaginative thinking through ako ā-ringa (hands-on learning)

Later in the day, we laxed out (relaxed) in the rā māhana (warm sun), enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and calm play with our hoa (friends).

    Ngā Akoranga (Learning):
🌱 Developing sensory processing and motor skills through creative play
🌱 Expressing emotions, identity, and ideas through art and dress-up
🌱 Strengthening friendships and social skills by celebrating kindness together
🌱 Building language through shared experiences and te reo Māori use

He rā tino māwhero, tino ātaahua hoki! (What a very pink and beautiful day!)

He rā toi i te Kākano Ruma!
Today in the Kākano Ruma, we explored the magic of painting—outdoors in the warm autumn sun!

Our pēpi enjoyed using their hands, brushes, and sponges to explore colour, texture, and movement through paint. For our 0–2 year olds, this type of sensory learning is so valuable—it helps them understand the world around them through touch, sight, and sound.

    Sensory play like painting supports:
    • Rangahau | Exploration – discovering new sensations through texture, colour, and temperature
    • Auahatanga | Creativity – expressing thoughts and emotions in a non-verbal way
    • Akoranga ā-rehe | Learning through experience – building brain connections through cause and effect
    • Whakawhanaungatanga | Building relationships – bonding with kaiako and peers through shared experiences
    • Whakawhanake ā-tinana | Physical development – strengthening fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination

Surrounded by ngā rākau (the trees) and basking in the autumn sunshine, our tamariki painted with joy and curiosity—each movement helping them learn more about how their bodies and the world work.

“Nā tō rourou, nā taku rourou ka ora ai te iwi.”
With your food basket and my food basket, the people will thrive.
Together, through shared experiences and support, our tamariki flourish.

Ka mau te wehi, Kākano tamariki!
Our youngest artists are growing in confidence and creativity every day.
