    Kia ora e te whānau,

In Puawai rūma on wet days we spend lots of time with tamariki indoors. A beautiful collage activity yesterday was a wonderful invitation to stick, sprinkle, and decorate their paper. Learners develop hand eye coordination and find motor skills from tricky activities like these, as well as cooperation as they learn to work alongside each other. Drawing is another activity that ākonga enjoy on wet days, which also supports those early literacy skills. Drawing is the first step before writing!

Of course, when we can, we get straight outside for a kanikani and to "shake our sillies out".

    ✨✨✨Haerenga ki ngā whetu! ✨✨✨
    Kia ora e te whānau!
Last Thursday was a super exciting day! A few of our tamariki got the opportunity to explore the stars and head down to the Tairawhiti Museum for the Matariki Star Dome. Koka Ora was our guide, and we couldn't have asked for a better Koka to educate us. We all crawled into the dome one by one, and sat under the stars. Koka Ora went through the whetu, showing us all of them one by one, and explaining the significance of each whetu. Koka then gave us the tools to try and find Matariki in the sky, so we can find it on the night of our Matariki Celebrations here at Kindy! The tamariki absolutely loved it, and enjoyed furthering their learnings about Matariki, as we have been having heaps of conversations and activities about Matariki at kindy.

Matariki is a time to not only reflect on the past year, celebrate with whānau, and acknowledge those who we miss, being grateful for what we have in the present, but also looking forward, and expressing our hopes and dreams for the tau hou. It is vital for our tamariki to understand the importance of Matariki, and we are looking forward to seeing all our whānau at our Matariki night tomorrow night, where we will spend quality time together, and reflect on the positives of the last year!

Also a big mihi goes out to Terry, Abbalene, Nikki Jo and Juavanna, who were our parent helpers for our trip. We absolutely loved having you guys there and we couldn’t have done it without you guys! Ngā mihi kia koutou 🤍
See you all tomorrow night! 🤍

✨ Matariki Night Sky in Kākano Ruma ✨

Our pēpi (0–2 year olds) have been busy creating their own beautiful Matariki night sky 🌌

Using crayons, our tamariki first drew their own special mahi toi (artwork), exploring lines, shapes, and their creativity. Then came the magic — they carefully painted over their drawings with dye, watching the dye soak into the paper and their pictures shine through, just like the stars of Te Kāhui o Matariki twinkling in the night sky. 🌟

💛 Through this experience our pēpi are learning:
    • Akoranga ā-rehe (Fine motor skills): strengthening little fingers and hands while drawing and painting
    • Auahatanga (Creativity): expressing their ideas and experimenting with colours and textures
    • Mātauranga Māori: developing early understanding and connection to Matariki and te ao Māori
    • Ngākau harikoa (Joy): experiencing pride and wonder in their mahi toi

Matariki is a special time for reflection, celebration, and new beginnings — and even our youngest tamariki are a part of this beautiful journey. 🌿✨

We love watching our pēpi explore, create, and grow every day.
